there may be a reset/re sync button somewhere on the controller... the wii controllers got it like inside the battery area but I'm not sure about 360 controllers

You may just need to re-sync the concole to the controller. When I had to get a new 360 (stoped reading dics) I forgot to re-sync the Rock Band 2 controller and raged a bit till I rememberd to sync it. *Haha*

You should try getting the wireless controller with the cord adapter. That way, it's wireless when you want it [or when it decides to work that way] and corded when it doesn't. Just don't leave the battery in when you use it corded, or it'll kill the battery [unless you're charging it, that is].
And for the record, I don't like wireless controllers either. Except for the Wavebird for the Gamecube. That thing is awesome.
